Public Schools - Are They Necessary?

Here's an interesting suggestion... get rid of public government-run schools, and instead, cut taxes so families can afford private or parochial schools - and the government can help out where needed.

Schools would become more competitive and market-driven, and a ton of money would be saved by eliminating a lot of the bureaucracy in the Department of Education.

Whose idea was it that the government should be in the business of education? Undoubtedly, certain subjects and topics should be mandated, but should the government actually be running the schools?
